FOR some people, planning for Long Term Care is easier for some than for others because, on top of thinking about your health, you do have to think about how much does Long Term Care cost?
If you become ill, do you have someone in your family who will be fit and able, as well as financially able, to look after you? Even if that is the case, that family member will need respite of sorts so you have to take into account if you have the money to pay for care workers to come into your home. If your only option is to go into a home, as your circumstances dictate, have you got the money to pay those fees?
How Much Does Long Term Care Cost
From my own personal experience of a family member needing care in the home, day sits can cost between £10 and £30 per hour but night sits can prove even more expensive because it’s more often the case that you are getting a night sit in for seven or eight hours to allow the family member to get some sleep if they can. If you average out a day sit at £15 per hour, and you require three hours per day, you could be looking at an approximate annual cost of £16,000.
Residential care homes and nursing homes are a bit of a postcode lottery when it comes to costs.
The average care home costs across the UK in 2019-20, researched by LaingBuissson, for its Care of Older People UK market report, published in January 2021, shows the cost per week of residential care in England is £681; Northern Ireland is £551; Scotland is £769 and Wales is £640. The same report reveals the cost of nursing home care per week in England is £979; Northern Ireland is £706; Scotland is £735 and Wales is £858 per week.
